Jewellery Care

Most of Raimondo jewels are made out of gold or platinum. We also work with stelring silver and precious/semi-precious stones.

Our beautiful jewellery deserves due care and benefits from regular cleaning and careful handling. Each jewel is accompanied by sturdy box in which it should be stored when not being worn to keep it looking its best.

Stashing ones earrings into a makeup case or handbag, although convenient, is not recommended and can be detrimental to them and the materials used to craft them.

Precious metals are soft and impressionable, and bending and snapping will occur with careless treatment. Earring tops and studs should be treated gently and regularly checked that butterflies and fittings sit securely.

All metals tarnish. Things like oily skin, creams, perfume, water, the acidity of your skin, air, etc. can all affect the metal. Over time, if unworn or stored against other items of jewellery, tarnish will also develop.

All metals can tarnish when it comes in contact with the oxygen in the air. Counterintuitively, the best way to keep your jewels from blackening is to touch it and wear it. The oils from your skin add a layer of tarnish resistance.

For deep storage, it is best to use an airtight container. If you do see some tarnishing, you can polish it with the jewellery polishing cloth provided with your purchase.

Regular cleaning of gemstones will help stones to retain their glamour and shine. With the exception of pearls, emeralds and opals (as these are porous), gently clean your jewellery in warm soapy water and using a soft bristle toothbrush to gently clean the surface and in and behind any stone settings. Avoid harder bristled brushes or new toothbrushes as these can leave scratches on the surface of the metal. Rinse the piece under running water – with the plug in – and use a soft cloth to dry the piece.

Don’t forget to remove your rings when washing up or showering, as soap particles may become lodged in stone settings and crevices. Soaps can also leave a film over stones, creating a dull appearance. Avoid exposure to hot water and/or harsh chemicals and acids (such as household chemicals, perfumes, or hairsprays) as these may erode the finish or cause discolouration.

Pearls are particularly susceptible to damage from chemicals such as make-up and hair spray, so your pearl jewellery should generally be the last thing you put on when getting dressed, and the first thing you take off when undressing. Wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth as soon as you take them off. The cloth can be dampened with water, or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away. Pearls must never be put in an ultrasonic cleaning machine, or be cleaned with ammonia or harsh detergents. Don’t store your pearls with other jewellery because they can easily be scratched when metal or gemstones rub against them – store them in the cloth pouch that they originally came in and find a special section in your jewellery box for them.

Care should be taken to keep gold plated jewellery separate from other jewellery as the plating is a surface finish so it can be susceptible to wear, but if looked after correctly signs of wearing should only occur over a long period of time. Avoid wearing gold plated jewellery when swimming or bathing, and remove rings before applying hand cream as the acids in moisturisers can affect the longevity of the plating.

Perfumes and hairsprays can also have a negative effect, so apply before putting on gold vermeil jewellery. The dulled look that plated jewellery develops in time is caused by the core layer of metal tarnishing. A gold jewellery dip will bring out its original lustre, followed by a gentle wash in soapy water to remove any residue.

We offer a re-plating service for any Raimondo  jewellery pieces that are in need, the cost is nominal and is based on a combination of weight of the item and surface area that needs re-plating.

Bespoke Designs

Of course we do. Just contact us with what you have in mind and I will send you a quote. We prefer to meet with our clients when creating a commission. This allows us to have a better understanding of you, or you as a couple and the kind of jewellery that will suite your needs. Please send an email to hello@raimondo.co.za with the following information below:

An image or idea of what you are wanting to have created.

The ring size (if you have it).

The type, size and quality of stones you are wanting, if any.

Your budget

Please also send us a time and day that will suit you best for the consultation. If we feel that your commission suits our design aesthetic, we will confirm a consultation time with you via email.

The time frame for completing the commission depends on the amount of work we have at the time. Usually once the quote has been sent and accepted and the stones has been sourced, we will need 2 to 4 weeks for manufacturing.

We will help you as much as possible to find the correct ring size for you and your partner. We cannot however be held responsible for the size being incorrect. If you already know your exact ring size you can let us know what it is. Please always provide us with the British measurement. If you are not sure you can visit your local jeweller to find out, or stop by our studio in Cape Town and we can measure you.
